Amino Acid balancing for Improved Performance

An Amino Acid is the building block of protein and needed for many vital processes like the synthesis of hormones, neurotransmitters, and cell structures. There are twenty that are required, with ten of those called essential, because the cow cannot produce them herself. Each essential amino acid must be supplied by the diet, with two, Lysine and methionine being classed as first limiting. The cow also requires the non-essential amino acids but can produce them to match her needs.

42 litre cows on a 16% Crude protein diet.  Are you sure?

I was awakened to metabolizable and amino acids in dairy nutrition on a visit to Germany in 2010. Along with other members of my party I was given a presentation on a client’s herd performance by a veterinary who was also a qualified nutritionist. Initially I thought I was being shown a diet for a beef herd when looking at the crude protein of the diet at 16%, and was naive enough to ask the question. The presenter highlighted, 42 litres herd average, the cows being milked three times a day and said, “a cow has no requirement for crude protein, they need metabolizable protein which provide amino acids, true protein- we ensure the cow has sufficient rumen degradable protein balanced with an increased carbohydrate supply to synthesize her own microbial crude protein (MCP) supply as efficiently as possible. She then gets more metabolizable protein (MP), true protein, which is absorbed in the small intestine increasing the supply of amino acids”.

The experience of a well-known nutritionist

Article published by Kemin.

Ken March is a well-known and experienced nutritionist within our industry. 15 Years ago, he was introduced to the importance of amino acids and since then has become very experienced in this field. “Amino acids are known for their positive effect on performance and milk solids. However, experience taught me that it goes much further than that. They also improve the immune system resulting in improved herd health and in particular fertility, increased milk yield and milk solids”.

New formulation for PC Optimum Transition 1250.

Cow Management at transition is critical. It is closely linked to not only lactation performance but also to clinical and sub-clinical postpartum diseases and reproductive performance.

Vitally important in Close-Up diets is protein supply. Proteins are built from Amino Acids(AA’s) and have numerous and varied roles in the transition cow as Metabolizable Protein(MP). At transition if rations contain insufficient levels of AA’s, and protein, cows mobilize their limited protein reserves. These reserves are located in peripheral tissues and muscle.
